Incredibly, 4.3 million people from developing countries die annually and millions more suffer from prolonged indoor smoke exposure. Yet there’s little knowledge of this ongoing human crisis. In Nepal, some 77% of the population rely on biomass fuels, mostly wood, to meet their cooking and heating needs. Cooking over open fires and breathing in smoke day after day has dire consequences – disproportionately for women and young children. Replacing traditional stoves will greatly reduce carbon emissions, the fuel needed, and most importantly, sickness and death caused by indoor air pollution.
Mountains of Relief is committed to doing our part to turn the tide on this crisis and save lives by replacing unsafe traditional cookstoves… one stove at a time.
This is the traditional cooking method in Nepalese village homes. The smoke residue you see in the photo covers not only the walls and cooking utensils but also the lungs of the people who live there and often leads to premature death.
This is an example of the type of clean burning Improved Cook Stove that we wish to provide to families in Nepal so that they can breathe the clean mountain air that surrounds them and cook without fear of dying.

Smoke from indoor cooking fires is a leading cause of death of children under age five.
